With a 20 years’ experience as a GP, and 17 years in aesthetics, Dr Victoria Manning has always been passionate about improving women’s health and wellbeing. She declares that River Aesthetics —the clinic she founded with her long-time colleague and friend, Dr Charlotte Woodward—always had this philosophy at the heart of its vision.
In May this year, the two doctors gave their time to the Pink Ribbon foundation, which offers financial and emotional support to women suffering breast cancer.
One of the treatments offered at River Aesthetics is vaginal rejuvenation. Dr Manning has been using the injectable gels based on hyaluronic acid and antioxidant DESIRIAL and DESIRIAL Plus from Vivacy Laboratories for the last five years.
What are the main indications of DESIRIAL products?
Dr Manning notes that the DESIRIAL line is indicated for a wide range of women, including:
• Breast cancer patients, who cannot take oestrogen but are suffering from vaginal atrophy and dryness as treatment side effects.
• Women practising specific sporting activities where the labia majora are always solicited and under pressure— such as horse riding.
• Women who have undergone an episiotomy and are left with a scar, which makes sexual intercourse more painful.
• Women between 45 and 50 years old, who are suffering from labia minora exposure and those who feel aesthetic discomfort.
Dr Manning feels that DESIRIAL products address all the above-mentioned concerns and symptoms: the labia majora are puffed, which offers more protection to the labia minora. The vagina is hydrated and intercourse are more comfortable for the patient. Women retrieve their confidence as well as their sexual wellbeing.
What are the main profiles of patients for DESIRIAL treatments at River Aesthetics?
Dr Manning observes that a varied patient base is seeking the benefits of DESIRIAL and DESIRIAL Plus. Mostly younger women, between 20 and 30 years of age, come to the London branch of River Aesthetics with a cosmetic concern. However, in the Dorset and Hampshire branches, Dr Manning confirms that 75 to 80% of her patients are coming to seek help for functional reasons. This is a sign for Dr Manning that doctors need to be informed about the existence of DESIRIAL and need to expose the taboo of vaginal atrophy to their patients.
How long does it last?
Dr Manning says DESIRIAL effects last for approximatively nine months, which is one of the strengths of this product, compared to other products on the market, such as lubricants, which can be quite inconvenient, of arguable efficiency and embarrassing to use for some patients. The DESIRIAL treatment is done in minimum time—a 20 minute procedure which Dr Manning says can be done on your lunch break—for the maximum duration.
What is so special about DESIRIAL gels?
Alongside its long-lasting effects, DESIRIAL are currently the only CE approved injectable gels indicated for the vagina. For Dr Manning, this is unmistakable proof of a high-quality manufacture.
Surprisingly, DESIRIAL products address an issue that affects a wide range of women, although it is highly unspoken about. The gel is adapted to the particularity of the tissue. As a result, the gel is concentrated and conserves its capacity to attract water and therefore, to hydrate the vagina but stays fluid at the same time.
Dr Manning also notes the presence of an antioxidant, the mannitol, in DESIRIAL, to minimise the risk of swelling the rapid break down of the injected hyaluronic acid gel. In this respect, she highly encourages women to open up to their GP about their intimate health issues.
